Will JavaScript type annotations kill TypeScript?
The creators of Svelte and Turbo 8 both dropped TS recently saying that "it's not worth it".
Yes: If JavaScript gets type annotations then there's no reason for TypeScript to exist.

No: TypeScript remains the best language for structuring large enterprise applications.

TBD: The existing user base and its corpensource owner means that TypeScript isn’t likely to reach EOL without a putting up a fight.

I hope they both die. I mean, if you really need strong types in the browser then you could leverage WASM and use a real programming language.

What’s on your mind? The New Stack wants to know!

Starting this week, we will post a question on the our TNS home page that we are hoping you will want you to answer.

It will only take a second, and we promise it’ll be fun, or at least as painless as possible.

We call this survey “VoxPop,” which means “Voice of the People.”

We will ask a new question each week. For instance, this week’s question is:

Will AI replace software engineers in the near future?

You will always be able to find the question on the banner on top of the home page.

And, for this week, the possible answers are:

  • It’s no threat. Stochastic parrots can’t debug code because they don’t comprehend it in the first place.
  • It can’t be trusted. It’s like having a team member that’s on drugs and lies to you, a lot.
  • I sure hope not, I have bills to pay.
  • Maybe not “replace”, but it’s already proven to be beneficial to the profession, and this is only the beginning.
  • I for one welcome our new AI overlords.

For topic matter, we’ll look at the news of the week in our community and devise a question and a cheeky set of answers that hopefully cover the range of possible responses.

Eventually, we’ll set up a forum where readers can discuss these topics further (we were thinking LinkedIn, but are also open to other platforms).

In the meantime, we will discuss the results in each edition of the weekly TNS newsletter. So subscribe if you want to find out what your peers are thinking.

For TNS, the survey question will help better determine what topics our readers are interested in, which will help us better select stories down the road. Our sponsors may also use the survey from time to time to answer questions they may have about our community.

Your answers, and any other related information we gather, will be strictly confidential.

And if you have any questions you’d like us to consider for VoxPop, please drop us a line.
